Most of Orland Park is in Cook County, so its sewers answer to the Metropolitan Water Reclamation District rather than a DuPage or Will County system. Sump Pump Naperville books sump pump repair, replacement, backup pumps and ejector work for homes in ZIPs 60462 and 60467, and a plumber does the work once you've approved a written price.
Streets and subdivisions the county flags for flooding
Cook County's 2024 hazard mitigation plan includes an Orland Park section that names the trouble spots: "143rd St. SW Highway, Wolf Road, Highland Ave, and residential areas are all prone to flooding." It adds that flooding "occurs in subdivisions like Catalina, Fernway, and other areas near to 100 year flood plain locations," often along the village's five creeks, and that Marley Creek "continues to get silt fill that reduces the capacity of the creek." The plan counts five FEMA repetitive-loss homes in the village and one severe repetitive-loss home.
Work is under way to ease some of it. The Grasslands Regional Detention Basin expansion, now finished, was planned to reduce flooding for an estimated 30 structures, and the Village awarded a contract in late 2025 to stabilize stretches of Tinley Creek.
On any street, water that comes out of the pipe beside the foundation runs back into the drain tile. The discharge line should run out to where the yard drains away from the house.
MWRD sewers and the sump rule
Orland Park's sewage goes to MWRD's Calumet Water Reclamation Plant, which serves more than a million people across southern Cook County. Orland Park runs its own separate sanitary sewers, and MWRD holds local systems like it to an inflow and infiltration program aimed at keeping clean water out of sewer pipes. MWRD's homeowner brochure is direct: "If your home has a stormwater sump pump, make sure it does not discharge to the sanitary sewer."
Water that comes up a floor drain during a storm is sewer water, and the sump can't stop it. A sealed ejector pit and a backflow device are how a basement gets protected from it, and the storm flooding guide explains the difference.
Houses from the 1970s through the 1990s
Orland Park grew fast after 1950, and Census estimates put 64.5% of its homes in the 1970 to 1999 range. ZIP 60462 is the older half, with a median build year of 1983, and 60467 is newer, at 1996.
Southwest-side storms
In April 2013, local reporting put Orland Park's rain at 4.04 inches over 24 hours, and the Weather Service logged 4.45 inches in nearby Palos Park and widespread flooding across southern Cook County. Over August 16-19, 2025, flooding closed 143rd Street near Creek Crossing Drive. A storm like either one keeps a pump running for hours, and a backup pump covers the main pump if it fails partway through.
Palos Heights, Palos Park, Palos Hills, Homer Glen, Worth, Chicago Ridge and Bridgeview are on the list too. Joliet and Bolingbrook are to the west. The areas page has every town and ZIP.
