Bolingbrook Sump Pump Repair and Backup Pumps

The 2013 storm sent the East Branch to a record crest at Bolingbrook. A timed pump test shows whether your pump and backup can keep up.

Bolingbrook straddles the Will and DuPage county line, and Sump Pump Naperville books sump pump repair, replacement and battery backups on both sides of it. A plumber does the work once you've approved a written price.

Where the first Bolingbrook houses went up

Bolingbrook started as three tracts sold from 1961 to 1965, Westbury, Colonial Village and King's Park, whose families incorporated the village in 1965. The 1970s were the biggest building decade, with 28.8% of today's homes, by Census estimates. ZIP 60440, where the village began, has a median build year of 1979. ZIP 60490, on the west side, has a median of 2001.

That split shows up in the basement. In a 1970s house the pump has likely been changed already, while the basin, the discharge line and the way it leaves the house may be original. A 2000s house still has the builder's pit and may have the builder's check valve. Either way, the visit looks past the pump at the pieces around it.

A record crest on the East Branch

The National Weather Service keeps a river gauge on the East Branch of the DuPage River at Bolingbrook. In April 2013 that gauge set a record crest of 25.54 feet, beating the 2008 mark. In May 2020 it reached 22.32 feet. On May 17, 2020, the Weather Service logged vehicles stalled in floodwater along Naper Boulevard between Royce and Bailey roads, and several inches of water on Weber Road at 135th Street.

Storms like that keep a pump running for hours. A pump that just keeps up in an ordinary spring can lose ground in one of them, and ComEd power can go out in the same storm. A backup sump pump covers both, and the storm flooding guide sorts out why a basement took water with the pump running.

Separate storm and sanitary sewers

The Village is clear that "stormwater and sanitary sewers are two separate systems," and it lists illegal sanitary sewer connections among the discharges it doesn't allow. A floor drain or laundry tub runs to the sanitary sewer, so a sump line emptying into one is the kind of connection the Village doesn't allow. If yours does, the footing drain page covers moving it.

A detention basin in a subdivision filled with stormwater

The Village sends sewage to its three water reclamation plants, and homeowners maintain everything on their side: the private sewer lateral, the cleanouts and the plumbing inside the house. Water coming up a basement floor drain is a sewer problem, and a sealed ejector pit is part of how a basement gets protected from it.

Romeoville, Woodridge, Lemont and Homer Glen are on the list too. Sump pump repair in Naperville is just north, Plainfield is to the west, and Joliet is down I-55.

Bolingbrook sump pump questions

Will the work need a Bolingbrook permit?

The Village says permits are required for repairs and alterations as well as new work, obtained before the work starts. If your job needs one, it shows up as a line on your written price.

We're finishing the basement. Does anything change for the pit?

The Village asks for a letter from the licensed plumber of record with a basement-finish permit. It's also the time to make sure the pit stays reachable behind an access panel, and to add a backup before drywall goes up around it.

Do you cover both Bolingbrook ZIPs?

Yes, 60440 and 60490, plus the edges of the village that carry a Plainfield ZIP.

Can my pump handle a storm like 2013 again?

Your plumber fills the pit, times how fast the pump empties it and checks the backup, then tells you in writing what it would take to keep up.
